Jim's Story

Workplace Been in a lot of workplaces in my 48 years of working life. Right now I'm pretty much retired and have been since 2004. I still keep busy doing real estate appraisals 20 hrs a week but, here in Flotida, real estate is very slow so there has been lots of time for travel, camping, motorcycle touring, and puttering. Yes, puttering. That stuff which older men do to keep busy out in the garage or yard. But, work has been really good to me. I have done a lot of varied stuff. Probably just like everyone else. Looking back, my first paying job was with Frank Lebirty on his farm in Marlton. 12 years old and making 50 cents per hour. Weeding and picking the tomatos, strawberries, beans, and peppers. Helping out at the farm stand at the four point intersection near St Joan of Arc was less difficult and more fun. It must have been a long time ago cause all of the fields have gone to woods and you'd never know that once the land was tilled by a three generation Italian family who always worked hard. Military I was only 17 when we graduated, so I wasn't too worried about the draft. Remember that whole Viet Nam thing and seeing our older classmates coming home from boot camp and visiting Lenape in their new uniforms ? College was not financially possible ( gradewise too) for me so I knew that sooner or later I would have to enlist or get drafted. Before I turned 18 in August I went to the selective service board in Mt Holly. Nice people there told me if I registered for the draft that day. I would most likely be called for a physical in Oct.'66 and most likely be sent to boot camp by Christmas ''66. It was kind o...Expand for more
f a shock to hear all of this so I left without registering that day. The following weekend Jim Brown and I were on the beach at OCNJ. He had the same problem, sooner or later the draft was gonna get him too. So we decided to enlist in the Navy on the buddy system. We didn't give it much thought, kind of an impulse decision. I went to the Navy recruiter in Burlington and since I was still 17, I needed to have my parents signature. The recruiter suggested I wait till I turned 18 so if anything happend to me, my parents would not be left feeling guilty. So Brownie and I went to Great Lakes in Jan '67. Just in time to meet up with the blizzard of the century. 24" of snow in a few days. We never even saw bare ground till March. We left boot camp in April. I went to school in Memphis and J. Brown went to San Diego. So we were buddies for boot camp only. I became a aviation electronics tech and worked on radios and navagation equipment. Right after school in Memphis, I went to Corpus Christi Tx. Beautiful place right on the gulf. I spent the remaining three years of my enlistment in TX. It was great. On my off time beach, fishing, motorcycles, and some easy Gulf surfing filled in the idle hours. Worked on the ground and as flight crew on TS2a's. Spent some time at sea on board carriers Lexington, Essex, and Intrepid. Ran into Ray Johanson and John Bauer on board one of them. Ended up as an E5 second class petty officer. Life was good. Met my wife in Texas and brought her home to Jersey. Navy was probably the best thing to happen in my younger life. Came home with the GI bill and finally made it to college at BCC
